“I don’t want to upset two excited soon-to-be parents over absolutely nothing, but I worry this could get her picked on once people her age make the connection.”
You know that moment where your close friend announces she’s going to name her unborn baby something really bizarre, such as a series of letters and numbers like Elon Musk and Grimes naming their child X AE A-XII… or this baby who was named Sanitiser to remember the thing that saved us all during the pandemic. Yes, really.
History has been speckled with countless terrible baby name choices from epic bogan baby names to this list of the worst baby names ever.
If you see your friend about to head down the baby name path that is bound to set them on one of the above lists, are you morally obligated to speak up and potentially save their future child from a lifetime of horrible nicknames and torment?

“I worry this could get her picked on”
One man has posted to Reddit about two close friends who are on their way to such ridicule, and he is wondering if he should say something to the expectant parents.
“I was pretty floored by what they want to name their daughter who is due in a fortnight,” the man wrote in his post after describing his friends as “really mature people” who “value things like compromising and apologising.”
They all met at a Comic-Con event several years ago, and he says he hopes to one day have a relationship like theirs.
But the man says he was “shocked” to hear of their chosen name for their impending arrival which is intended to be a nod to the way they met all those years earlier.
The name is Annie Mae, as in after the hand-drawn and computer animation style which originated from Japan known as Anime.
He explained, “They felt that the two traditional names would mask the true meaning, whilst reflecting how they met like a little ‘easter egg’ sort of thing.”
He added that his friends were both severely bullied in high school, and he does not want to to see the same happen to their child.
“I worry that saying something would make me an arse because the traditional names may well be enough to mask the Anime association, particularly for those who don’t know,” he said.
He added that with Mae as the girl’s middle name, the connection may not be obvious enough, and particularly when it’s written down, it really does not resemble Anime at all, completely missing the point of it being a little ‘easter egg’ sort of thing.
He asked if he would be an a**hole if he did point this out to his friends, not out of malice, but “because I love my friends dearly and I want to protect this loveable, wholesome family with every fibre of my being.”

Subtlety for the win!
Many people found the name really cute, but if the intention is to pay a subtle nod to the common interest that brought the couple together, then it’s perfect.
“It’s a very cute name with special meaning for the family,” commented one redditor, who added, “specially if Mae is only used as a middle name and not part of the first name. Let them have their joy and their little family secret. There’s many worse things they could do, like name their kid X AE A-12.”
“Annie Mae is subtle enough that even if someone knew her middle name, it wouldn’t be obvious,” added another.
A few commented along the lines of, “Good grief, this is none of your business!” and “Stay out of it.”
And one said, “If they were naming their kid straight-up ‘Anime’ I’d see your side. But most people won’t even notice to give a shit, so why do you care?”
