Boy, 12, dies in Cairns after ‘physical altercation’ with a group of youths

The boy was at a park with three friends when the tragic incident happened.

A 12-year-old boy has died after a “physical altercation” with another group of youths in a Cairns park overnight, police say.

Emergency services were called to Shang Park in Mooroobool around 6.18pm on Thursday to reports of a disturbance between a number of young people.

“Initial investigations suggested the boy was with three other boys when they became involved in a verbal altercation with another group at the location,” Queensland police said in a statement on Friday morning.

“It is believed the 12-year-old boy then became involved in a physical altercation causing him to fall to the ground and become unconscious. The details of this altercation are being investigated.”

The boy was taken to Cairns Hospital however he was pronounced deceased a short time later.

A crime scene has been established at the park to determine his cause of death and investigations continue.
