Coronavirus Australia: pandemic sees a surge in home-schooling bookings

With many parents wary about sending their children back to school during the coronavirus pandemic, a home-schooling boom could be underway as providers have been flooded with enquiries.

Melbourne based parents Rebecca and Chris Romeril are one such couple that have chosen to pull their four primary school aged children out of school, following two months of remote learning.

“The remote learning really showed me how my kids learnt,” Mrs Romeril told 9News.

“All I ever wanted to be was a mum so I said well if I can spend more time with my children and be their mum and their teacher and everything in between, well why not?”

And her husband agreed saying his children were more motivated than ever.

“You get home 6pm at night and they’re still doing stuff because they choose to,” he said.

“Even on a weekend – ‘I would like to do worksheets’ and that was never the case.”

“The kids asked to be home schooled”

Brisbane parent of six, Georgina has also decided to home school her kids after two months of remote learning.

In fact, the coronavirus lockdown has been blessing in disguise for the family as Georgina doesn’t think they would have discovered how much better learning at home is for their family otherwise.

“The kids had asked to be homeschooled many times before and I’ve always said no because my husband was never on board with home education,” Georgina told Kidspot.

“He was able to really access things from a different perspective thanks to the schools closing.

“He got a chance to really focus on their current schooling and understand that there are other ways for our children to learn that can suit them better.

“It gave us the opportunity to spend time together, slow down and assess what was really important in our lives.”
