Mums ‘revolting’ discovery with wooden spoon test

In 2016, MasterChef judge Matt Preston suggested that home cooks avoid wooden spoons and if you must use them, to soak them in boiling water for 20 minutes beforehand.

And recently one mum vowed to toss her spoon in the bin after she discovered something “revolting” after soaking the utensil.

“Does anyone soak their wooden spoons in boiling water? Mine always go into the dishwasher every night but that doesn’t stop what gets absorbed,” she said alongside a photo of her spoon in yucky looking discoloured water.

“Revolting really,” she wrote.

“Phew, stinky!”

Her post, shared on social media, was flooded with comments saying that they too had tried this trick with equally disgusting results.

“I find they have a funky taste if they have been soaked in water so I just grab cheap ones often, chuck them after a few uses or else the taste leaches into foods or they crack,” one person said.

“That’s why I use silicon spatulas! I know they are clean,” a mum said.

“No wooden spoons or boards in my kitchen at all for this reason,” said another.

One mum said that she wasn’t opposed to wooden utensils and had never fallen sick from using them.

“No one has been sick from it. I just wash and dry it,” she said.

“Have used wooden spoons for decades. I am still here,” another added.

A few years back, Matt revealed that while the wooden spoon looks like the perfect present, it’s better to buy a silicon spatula instead adding that the real test comes when you soak them in hot water.

“Give it a sniff. Phew, stinky! And you were going to stir your custard with that,” Preston told Delicious.

“Ask for a $10 silicon spatula instead. They’re hygienic, heat-resistant and flexible, so they are great for getting into the corner of a pan or getting every last skerrick out of a bowl,” he suggested.
