Our guide to weighted blankets for kids: anxiety, autism, ADHD

Getting your little ones to establish a good sleep schedule can be difficult. And with everything going on in the world right now, it’s understandable if kids (and parents!) are struggling with getting a good night’s sleep. Fortunately, the latest trend in sleeping accessories might just provide some much-needed relief.

Weighted blankets have been around for a few years now, and have been praised as a great tool for reducing anxiety and improving sleep quality. They’re usually quilts weighed down with glass beads, and they mimic the sensation of being hugged. The technical term for this is Deep Pressure Stimulation (DPS), a therapy method used to treat stress and anxiety due to the way it can release both serotonin and dopamine in the brain.

Not only are weighted blankets ideal for nervous kids, they’re also well-suited to children with autism, ADHD and other sensory conditions that respond well to DPS.

According to Calming Blankets, children under three should not use weighted blankets, and “the most important safety consideration is that your child can lift the blanket independently. If they can do that, they can safely use the blanket”.

There are plenty of blankets on the market, but it’s best to choose one that’s around 10 per cent of your child’s body weight. We’ve rounded up a few of our favourites below.
